For over 40 years PNNL staff have provided technical support in decommissioning to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and international organizations under the DOE International Safety Program. Our areas of specialization include:

  • Supporting development of decommissioning regulatory guidance such as RG 1.191, SRP 9.5.1, NUREG-0586, NUREG-1496, and NUREG-1713, along with more than 30 NUREG/CRs on technology, safety and costs of decommissioning
  • Environmental assessments and environmental impact statements
  • Decommissioning cost estimates and nuclear power plant decommissioning fund assessments
  • Resident inspector guidance
  • Radiological characterization of systems, structures, components, materials, and environment
  • Dose assessment of residual radioactive contamination
  • Risk-informed cleanup prioritization, most recently for Fukushima Daiichi
