New Reactor Licensing

Supporting the licensing of new reactors and regulatory infrastructure for small modular reactors

Nuclear Reactor Licensing

Construction of Vogtle Electric Generating Plant units 3 and 4.

For almost two decades, teams of researchers at PNNL have engaged in large multi-year, multi-task projects for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) that support the licensing of new nuclear reactors in the United States.

Our team

  • Drafted design-specific review standards for small modular reactors (SMRs)
  • Led NRC environmental reviews of the Vogtle and VC Summer plants—the first U.S. builds in over 34 years
  • Led the NRC environmental review of Watts Bar 2—the first new operating license in 20 years
  • Is leading NRC environmental review of Tennessee Valley Authority's Clinch River SMR site
