Uranium from Seawater

PNNL is helping increase the available reserves of uranium by three orders of magnitude

Uranium from Seawater

Seawater test system, located at PNNL's Marine Sciences Laboratory in Sequim, Wash.

We've been collaborating with Oak Ridge National Laboratory to significantly improve the efficacy of materials designed to absorb uranium from seawater.

Our contributions have included

  • Use of our Marine Sciences Laboratory (the only one in the DOE complex) to assess the efficacy of the absorbent material
  • Integration of activities and assessment of results from tests conducted at other marine labs across the country
  • Demonstration of a six fold improvement in the efficacy of absorbent materials over prior technologies
